It all started with a simple question: why is it so difficult to find geeky button-up shirts?

In response, we founded a small business that designs or sources patterns for our handmade-to-order products.

Geek Tropical came about as we went on a search for nerd apparel for our own wardrobes. We were sadly disappointed to find a lack of originality, color, and options in the short sleeve button up space. As a result, we made it our mission to do something about it, and now we have multiple product options outside of Hawaiian shirts, like nerdy dresses and matching bucket hats.

Level 1: The Secret Dragon

Says "I have good taste, and possibly a hoard. But that's a secret for my closest friends."

Good for work lunches, travel days, dinner, anyone who’d rather not be the center of the room.

Level 1 is for those who want their shirt to blend in easily. It’s more about texture than catching the eye of someone who wants to ask more questions.

A good example? The Blue Purple Dragon Scales button up skips the creature entirely. This one features a texture of dragon scales. Not too obvious, but those who get it will know what you’re going for.

Origami Dragons Dark does something similar. This one goes a bit further and features folded-paper dragons on a midnight ground: angular, clean.

Floral Dragon Night hides its dragons in florals on a deep night background and works great under a blazer.

Level 2: The Recognizable Reference

Says "Yes, that’s a dragon. Thanks for noticing."

Good for bookstores, breweries, casual parties, date nights, book events.

At Level 2, you’re going for “more visible, but the shirt is still doing shirt things”.

Glimpses in Dragon Time lets Rose Khan’s incredible dragon pattern fade in and out with just enough curiosity to be something from across the room – but fun to explore up close.

Tropical Dragons is somewhere between Level 1 and Level 2. You’ll spot the dragons within the leaves, but from afar, it looks like a great button-down.

Good for conventions, game night, festivals, birthdays, photos, vacation, you name it.

When you’re ready to command some attention, you’re ready for Level 3. This is where you wear your fandom proudly – and look really good while doing it.

Dragon Weaving Inferno runs dragons through ember-lit fire. Color-wise, you’ll definitely be seen with the oranges cracking against deep teal. Rainbow Dragons and Unicorns is exactly as bright as it sounds.

Many of our designs in the Fantasy collection also exist as sleeveless dresses, long-sleeve button-ups, curvy cuts, youth shirts and bucket hats — so Rainbow Dragons and Unicorns can be a dress, or a bucket hat, or both at once if that’s the plan.

Geek Tropical offers two different types of buttoned shirt styles: "Hawaiian" and "Button Down" / "Button Up" shirts

Hawaiian Shirt: A classic Hawaiian button up closure and camp collar (also known as the Cuban collar) – a perfect shirt for everyday wear or business casual work settings.
Button Down Shirt: A more dressy look with a straight collar and button down closure complimented with a top button - great when you want to pair the shirt with a tie or for any type of event, casual or formal.
Curvy Button Up Shirts: Tapered waist and bust darts to follow natural curves, delivering a closer, more flattering fit. Made-to-order or ready-to-ship

We are unique in that we operate as both a print-on-demand company and have stock at our U.S.-based location in Phoenix, Arizona. As a result, our policies vary depending on whether items are made-to-order or ready-to-ship, as well as the customer’s location.

Made-to-order

We accomplish this by partnering with a trusted print on demand shop in located in Vietnam. Using this method nothing goes to waste, and we avoid the "fast fashion" trend. Each individual shirt receives love and care as a completely handmade cut and sewn product made from raw fabric rather than screen printed on mass produced shirts.

Ready-to-ship

Geek Tropical has reserved a limited stock that is ready-to-ship in 1-2 business days from our location in Arizona.

For items marked as ready-to-ship, due to the excessive price of shipping, we only ship within the United States.

Currently, we resell our returns at clearance and promise faster shipping times for customers that have a deadline and cannot wait for our made-to-order items to arrive.

We're a small business that started on Etsy in 2021, where we earned a 4.9/5.0 star rating. We're proud to currently maintain a 4.8/5.0 star rating across Google, Meta Shop (Facebook & Instagram), Shop (Shopify), and Loox (on our site).

Our apparel is featured in museums and game stores across the United States, including the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

Sizing

Sizing is by far the most common complaint. It's also on the nervous list of most first time customers before they order. We've changed it and changed it and changed it as we've received feedback from reviews and advice from us and many good customers the answer if you're in between sizes is: size up. Online clothes sizing is a minefield. Nobody's cracked it.

Nothing hidden

All of our reviews are handled by Loox. The system is compliant with EU Omnibus Directive. The European rule is there to protect you from stores from creating fake reviews and secretly getting rid of the bad ones. The negative reviews stay published. So do the neutral ones. And the ones from people who didn't love their shirt as much as they expected.

Scroll down and skip over the 17 positive ones and go straight to the 13 negative ones, if that's your thing. These are a small minority. They are not filtered or hidden in any way.

Prints

What customers seem to comment on most is durability of the prints, in vast majority of cases in a positive way. Cheap clothing will fade after a few trips through the wash; customers will come back to update old reviews, sometimes nearly a year later, telling us that the shirts still looked great.

Care Instructions for Geek Tropical Products

For apparel with buttons, button up the item(s) and turn them inside out before washing and drying. Wash inside out in cold water with like colors on a gentle cycle. Use only non-chlorine bleach when necessary. Tumble dry on low or hang dry.

What countries do you ship to?

For items made-to-order, we ship to the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and EU Countries.

How much is shipping?

Shipping costs depend on value of your order and the country where it’s being delivered. Please refer to the delivery cost table in our shipping policy to check the postage fees for different destination countries. If your order value is more than $75 after discounts, we provide free shipping.

Why is there a delay to my tracking?

It is normal to see a delay to the updates to your tracking numbers. Since our print shop is in Vietnam, many tracking numbers do not activate until they are physically received by the local carrier or post office in your country. For the United States, typically there is a 3-5 business day delay for the tracking number to start receiving updates with USPS.

Can I alter my order?

When an order is placed for a made-to-order product, we pay for the materials and labor for the order to be produced so edits and cancellations after the order has been placed are generally not accepted. If you have just placed the order within a few hours, please reach out to us as soon as possible to increase the chances of us being able to accommodate your request.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept the following credit cards: MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover. We also accept payment by PayPal, Apple Pay, Meta Pay, Google Pay, and Shop Pay.

Can you or will you print with Natural Materials like Cotton?

Products with designs that can be printed with direct-to-garment (DTG) are 100% cotton, such as our T-Shirts (with exception to heather colors which contain polyester).

At Geek Tropical, our choice to use print-on-demand was guided by its positive impact on the environment and the customization it allows. By producing items only when they're ordered, we minimize waste and steer clear of the fast fashion pitfalls. This method also gives us the flexibility to offer a wider range of designs without needing large inventories, keeping our collection fresh and in tune with current trends.

Do you sell gift vouchers or gift cards?

Yes, we do! Our e-gift cards are delivered electronically via email, each with a unique reference number. They're the perfect choice if you're unsure what to get for that special geek in your life.
